  1. DIALOGUE
  2. by sineovercosine
  3.
  4. ∗ The sun sets as you walk down the mountain path, holding Mom's hand.
  5.
  6. Toriel: This... is real. *sob* I almost can't remember the surface...
  7.
  8. Toriel: ...oh my god, where are we going to live?! I'll have to buy a house, and our money is probably no good here, and-
  9.
  10. ∗ You hug her.
  11.
  12. Frisk: Mom, those are boring problems!
  13.
  14. Toriel: Heh. I suppose with the Barrier down, I should stop thinking things are so impossible.
  15.
  16. ∗ But... maybe she has a point. It is a world of humans out there, after all...
  17.
  18. Alphys: Row row, fight the power!?
  19.
  20. Alphys: Ehehehe, you probably never saw that...
  21.
  22. ∗ You caught up to Alphys and Dad catching their breaths on a rock.
  23.
  24. ∗ He looks away from Toriel, and she reciprocates.
  25.
  26. Alphys: Um... soooo... Undyne and Papyrus ran ahead. They're probably at the foot of the mountain already!
  27.
  28. Alphys: ...OMIGOSH WE LET UNDYNE MEET THE HUMANS FIRST!
  29.
  30. ∗ Welp. Better get down there for damage control.
  31.
  32. ∗ You give Dad your other hand. He and Mom still avoid interacting, but they both seem willing to match your pace.
  33.
  34. Alphys: So, uh... Frisk... is there anything we need to be ready for out here?
  35.
  36. Alphys: I mean, it's what, the year 21X0 now? That's the latest date I've seen on the trash anyways...
  37.
  38. Frisk: Hmm. I never really watched it myself, but I think Mew Mew Kissy Cutie is up to 11 series now.
  39.
  40. Alphys: Get. Out.
  41.
  42. Toriel: But we just did!
  43.
  44. ∗ ✳ ∗ ✳ ∗
  45.
  46. ∗ You reach the road at the base of the mountain. There are flashing blue and red lights, apparently police cars.
  47.
  48. Papyrus: HUMAN! KING ASGORE! I HAVE DONE A DIPLOMACY!
  49.
  50. ∗ You, Toriel, and Alphys quickly glance around to find Undyne.
  51.
  52. ∗ She and one of the officers seem to be holding a sharpshooting competition across the road.
  53.
  54. ∗ A mangled quiche is propped against a log, full of bullets and spears. It probably deserved what it got.
  55.
  56. Asgore: What... happened here?
  57.
  58. Papyrus: WELL. FIRST, UNDYNE FLAGGED DOWN THE HUMAN ROYAL GUARD!
  59.
  60. Papyrus: THEY WERE SCARED OF HER.
  61.
  62. Papyrus: THINKING QUICKLY, I OFFERED THEM THE EMERGENCY SPAGHETTI I KEEP UNDER MY HAT!
  63.
  64. Papyrus: THEY TRIED IT! AND THEN
  65.
  66. Undyne: I was the lesser of two evils!
  67.
  68. ∗ Undyne pushes her way back into the group with a toothy grin, her practice partner following.
  69.
  70. Undyne: So then I roleplayed what Frisk would do, and now we're almost besties!
  71.
  72. Papyrus: I DON'T THINK FRISK WOULD ASSAULT AN INNOCENT PASTRY TO SHOW OFF.
  73.
  74. Undyne: So I took liberties with their character!
  75.
  76. Officer 06: 05 is calling our supervisor; it may be an hour before we can get somebody... qualified for the situation out here.
  77.
  78. ∗ About five seconds into the hour, everybody notices a limousine round a corner and come to a stop.
  79.
  80. Officer 06: M-Mayor June?!
  81.
  82. ∗ An elderly woman steps out of the vehicle's front door, while the back door opens and- you have got to be kidding me.
  83.
  84. Sans: hey guys. thought i'd save some time, take a shortcut ahead, and fetch the mayor for you. she has a sweet ride.
  85.
  86. Papyrus: SANS! YOU HAD BETTER NOT HAVE NEGOTIATED A PEACE TREATY WITHOUT ME AGAIN!
  87.
  88. Sans: no problem bro.
  89.
  90. Mayor: The ride here was occupied soley by political puns.
  91.
  92. ∗ She faces Mom, Dad, and Papyrus.
  93.
  94. Mayor: Mayor June, of Ebottown. And who is in charge here?
  95.
  96. ∗ Dad takes a deep breath, and makes what appears to be an unusually heroic effort to get his words out.
  97.
  98. Asgore: K-King A-Asgore Dreemurr. Of- The Underground.
  99.
  100. Asgore: My p-people come in... peace.
  101.
  102. ∗ The Mayor looks over Dad, Mom, Papyrus, Undyne, you, Alphys, and Sans, then casts a glance up the mountain, where the lights of other travelling parties can be seen exiting the mountain.
  103.
  104. Mayor: So. The Barrier is finally broken.
  105.
  106. Mayor: I was looking forward to this day.
  107.
  108. Mayor: I was not looking forward to being the one responsible for handling it.
  109.
  110. ∗ Her gaze hardens into a stern stare.
  111.
  112. Mayor: I've done my homework. I only know of one way that you could have dispelled the Barrier.
  113.
  114. Mayor: How hard do I need to grieve?
  115.
  116. ∗ Dad looks utterly crestfallen. Mom has simply screwed up her face.
  117.
  118. ∗ Crap. They're both crying.
  119.
  120. Mayor: Look. I made my judgement on this case years ago.
  121.
  122. Mayor: And while I cannot approve of what I must assume happened...
  123.
  124. Mayor: I can understand what choices desperation can leave you.
  125.
  126. Mayor: The look on your face... is not that of an innocent person.
  127.
  128. Mayor: But then, none of us can undo what has happened.
  129.
  130. ∗ Not even you anymore, Frisk. Looks like you could only SAVE while we were behind the Barrier.
  131.
  132. Mayor: The look on your face... does betray regret.
  133.
  134. Mayor: Which means, I hope, that the future needn't fear you as the past did.
  135.
  136. Mayor: Therefore...
  137.
  138. Mayor: I offer your people amnesty. Please reward my trust.
  139.
  140. ∗ The Mayor is sparing Asgore.
  141.
  142. Asgore: T-thank you....
  143.
  144. ∗ Let's give him a bit of time alone. Looks like he won't be getting up for a while.
  145.
  146. ∗ Mom is actually looking... relieved?
  147.
  148. Sans: gee, lady, if i'd known you had a judgement speech prepared i'd have offered to let you borrow my material.
  149.
  150. Sans: i've got a whole stack of 'em.
